Turkey downs Russian warplane claiming airspace breach

Turkey shot down a Russian fighter plane Tuesday, prompting an angry response from Moscow and intensifying tensions in the global struggle over the future of Syria and the fate of the Islamic State.

The Turkish military said two F-16 shot down the Su-24 Russian attack aircraft then violated the airspace of Turkey - and after issuing 10 warnings in five minutes. Russian Defense Ministry denied the plane never deviated from Syrian airspace.

Army Col. Steve Warren, a US military spokesman in Baghdad confirmed that 10 warnings were issued and that the incident occurred "at the border." It was not immediately clear which side of the border shooting took place down, Warren said, adding that the army was examining the flight data said.

The plane crashed in the northwestern region of Bayirbucak Syria near the Turkish border. The Turkish news agency Dogan said witnesses reported seeing the plane crash more tents in a village. Rebels at the scene fatally shot two pilots parachuting, Alpaslan Celik, the deputy leader of a rebel force in Turkmenistan, he told several media. A Turkish official, however, told Reuters that his government believes that pilots are alive and that authorities were working to secure their release.
